The state minister for gender, labour, and social development in charge of children and youth affairs Hon. Balaam Barugahara, appeared on the Sanyuka Morning Xpress program today, hosted by Sanyuka TV.
During the engaging session, he addressed critical issues facing Ugandan musicians, comedians, and youth, offering insights and solutions for creating a better future.
Balaam Prohibits Certain Songs
Hon. Balaam revealed that he has taken decisive steps to ensure the moral integrity of music played on his radio stations. He stated:
This decision, he explained, stems from a need to protect young people from content that could negatively influence their values and behavior.
Addressing Drug Abuse Among Artists
Balaam expressed concern over the growing issue of drug abuse among some Ugandan musicians and comedians.
However he attributed the problem to factors such as poverty, low self-esteem, and curiosity. He highlighted:
“Some people struggle with low self-esteem and resort to drinking or taking drugs before engaging in abusive behavior.
Whereas, others experiment with drugs out of curiosity, which can lead to addiction.”
He applauded singer Jackie Chandiru for overcoming drug abuse and taking on the role of an ambassador against substance abuse, setting an inspiring example for others.
Tackling Poverty Through the Parish Development Model
Thus, to address poverty among youth and women, Hon. Balaam highlighted the government’s initiatives, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Under this program, each parish receives 100 million Ugandan shillings, with 30 million specifically allocated to support youth and women in creating employment opportunities.
“The government is committed to empowering the youth to be self-reliant,” he emphasized.
Skilling Centers for Youth Empowerment
As part of the government’s strategy to equip young people with practical skills, skilling centers have been established in various districts.
These centers offer training programs in trades and crafts, enabling youth to start small businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Action for Artists and Youth
The minister encouraged musicians, comedians, and all young people to embrace these government programs and avoid destructive behaviors like drug abuse.
Balaam called for a united effort to uplift Uganda’s creative industry and empower its youth.
By addressing these pressing issues, Hon. Balaam Barugahara continues to champion the cause of Uganda’s youth, paving the way for a brighter and more productive future.
Final Thoughts
The youth of Uganda hold potential to drive the nation’s growth.
With government initiatives like the PDM and skilling centers, coupled with positive role models like Jackie Chandiru, there is hope for a stronger and more resilient generation.
