Kira Municipality Set to Construct Key Roads Under Greater Kampala Metropolitan Plan

Kira Municipality has taken a significant step forward in its infrastructure development by signing contracts for the construction of three major roads. This project falls under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Development Urban Area initiative, aimed at enhancing the connectivity and infrastructure within the region.

The roads to be constructed include 9 kilometers of Mbogo Road, Bishop Cyprian Kizito Road, and 2.3 kilometers of Kungu-Bivanju Road. The construction work has been awarded to M/S Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO), a reputable firm known for its expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects.

Kira Municipality has been allocated UGX 173 billion to facilitate the development of these roads. This funding is expected to significantly improve transportation within the municipality, benefiting residents and boosting local commerce.

The contract signing event, held at Kira Municipality headquarters, was led by Minister of Kampala, Hajati Minsa Kabanda. During her address, Minister Kabanda emphasized the importance of integrity in the execution of the project. She warned the contractors against engaging in corrupt practices, stating that any form of bribery could compromise the quality of their work and hinder the project’s success.

Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, also addressed the gathering, urging the contractors to use the allocated funds responsibly. He highlighted the burden of Uganda’s growing national debt, now exceeding UGX 100 trillion, and stressed the importance of prudent financial management in public projects to avoid exacerbating the country’s financial challenges.

Town Clerk of Kira Municipality, Benon Yiga, expressed his appreciation to the residents who have agreed to allocate portions of their land for the road construction. He noted that 80% of the necessary agreements have been signed, demonstrating strong community support for the project.

This infrastructure development is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for Kira Municipality residents by reducing travel times, enhancing road safety, and promoting economic growth. As the project progresses, the municipality looks forward to the positive impact these roads will have on the region’s development.

The initiative marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to modernize Kira Municipality’s infrastructure, aligning with the broader goals of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Plan to create a more connected and prosperous urban area.
