Landslide in Bulambuli District Buries Houses, Claims Lives

Breaking: Landslide has struck Masugu and Kimono villages in Buluganya Sub-county, Bulambuli District, claiming the lives of at least 15 people.

More than 30 others are feared dead following the disaster that occurred on the night of November 28, 2024, after heavy rains lashed the area.

Extent of the Damage

The landslide buried over 45 houses, leaving many residents trapped under the rubble.

According to the Bulambuli District Presidential Spokesperson, Hajjati Faheera Mpalanyi, at least 112 people are still unaccounted for.

With some believed to have been washed away by floods caused by the Simu and Nabyonga rivers.

The flooding has also disrupted traffic, as the Simu River broke its banks and damaged the road connecting Simu and Soti districts.

Impact on Neighboring Areas

In addition to Bulambuli, nearby districts of Sironko, Manafwa, Mbale, Bududa, and Namisindwa are on high alert.

Communities living near mountainous regions are in a state of panic, fearing similar landslides due to ongoing heavy rains.

Emergency Support Needed

Local authorities and rescue teams are working to search for survivors and provide aid to the affected families.

However, the scale of the disaster requires immediate support from the central government and humanitarian agencies to assist displaced residents and rebuild critical infrastructure.

Advice to Residents

Authorities have advised residents in landslide-prone areas to evacuate to safer locations immediately and stay alert to weather updates.

Families living near riverbanks and steep slopes are especially urged to relocate to avoid further loss of life.

The Bulambuli landslide highlights the growing threat of extreme weather events in Uganda, particularly in mountainous regions.

Government agencies must work hand in hand with local leaders to improve disaster preparedness and ensure timely interventions to save lives.
