NIRA has postponed the renewal of identity cards.
The National Identification Authority (NIRA) has postponed the registration process for new identity cards, and the renewal of expired identity cards due to delays in funding.
NIRA had earlier announced June,2024 for the nationwide campaign, but has now extended it to the end of July,2024.
The agency says once the financial issue is resolved and other concessions, the program will be launched.
CEO Rosemary Kisembo said in July, the Electrol Commission will also have issued a roadmap for the 2026 general elections, which will also help them work together.
He said that in 2014 when they were registering people for the first time, they did the work for only 4 months, and they expect this time too the period they will do it, for those who renew their identity cards, need to correct their details.
NIRA has already stipulated that for issuance of new identity cards a person must first submit the old one, and those who do not have them will have to pay a fee, while for those who want to update their details, NIRA announced a fee of UGX 300,000, from 50,000/=.
