Updates: The Buganda Kingdom has issued a stern warning to artists and actors who are tarnishing the Buganda language through offensive songs and performances.
Speaking on this issue, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of the language, music, and theater for the betterment of the country and the kingdom.
Katikkiro Commends Lord Fred Ssebatta
The Katikkiro applauded legendary Kadongo Kamu artist Lord Fred Ssebatta for his dedication to promoting the Buganda language and culture through his music.
He highlighted Ssebatta’s unwavering love for the kingdom and his commitment to producing content that uplifts and educates.
Lord Fred Ssebatta, who has been a pillar in the Kadongo Kamu music genre, vowed to continue creating educational and meaningful songs.
He reaffirmed his dedication to safeguarding the dignity of Kadongo Kamu artists.
As a mark of his success and legacy, Lord Fred Ssebatta will celebrate his 42nd birthday on December 13, 2024, at the prestigious Serena Hotel in Kampala, where fans and well-wishers will join him in commemorating his achievements.
Katikkiro Criticizes Artists for Offensive Songs
In his address, the Katikkiro expressed disappointment with some Ugandan musicians who have resorted to using vulgar and offensive language in their songs.
He specifically mentioned artists Geresom Wabuyi, popularly known as Gravity Omutujju, and Mukasa Yasin, also known as Lil Pazo.
The Katikkiro noted that songs with inappropriate language have no place on Buganda’s media platforms, including CBS FM and BBS TV.
He urged artists to create music that promotes positive values and reflects the rich heritage of the Buganda Kingdom.
Gravity Omutujju Responds to Criticism
In response, Gravity Omutujju dismissed the allegations, stating that his music is neither abusive nor vulgar.
He argued that he has always created music that resonates with his fans.
Gravity further claimed that Buganda’s media houses have never supported his music since he started his career in 2011.
He urged the Katikkiro to focus on developmental issues affecting Buganda and Uganda at large, instead of condemning his music.
Gravity expressed dissatisfaction with the speech, suggesting that the Katikkiro may have been misled by advisors.
Lil Pazo Shares His Struggles
Similarly, Lil Pazo expressed his frustration through a TikTok video, addressing accusations that his music is vulgar.
He revealed his humble beginnings and described his rise to fame as a blessing.
Pazo lamented the calls to exclude him from concerts, stating that such actions undermine his hard work and dedication.
Despite the controversy, the Buganda Kingdom remains firm in its stance, urging all artists to respect the Buganda language and culture in their works.
The Buganda Kingdom’s call for ethical music and performances serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural values.
While artists like Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo defend their creative freedom, the Kingdom stresses the need for content that upholds respect and decency.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this will impact the music and entertainment industry in Uganda.
