Gen. Katumba Wamala Urges Public to Refrain from Building Near Roads.
General Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transportation, recently emphasized the importance of avoiding construction near roads, especially in areas earmarked for development projects like the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. During a gathering at Kira Church of Uganda Primary School to mark the launch of its 100th Anniversary Run, he underscored the need for residents to consider donating portions of their land to facilitate the timely commencement of road construction projects slated for July 2024.
Despite plans to begin construction soon, some landowners in Kira municipality have yet to finalize agreements to relinquish land needed for the road infrastructure. General Katumba Wamala’s remarks highlighted the potential risks and hindrances that unauthorized constructions near roadways can pose to both personal property and broader developmental efforts.
In response to concerns raised by the school’s administration, including Principal Agnes Nakimera Ssendagala and Headmaster John Bosco Kayongo, General Katumba Wamala expressed support for initiatives aimed at enhancing safety for students. Specifically, he pledged to assist in establishing a dedicated footpath along the upcoming road to mitigate risks associated with vehicular traffic, thereby safeguarding students from accidents caused by swerving vehicles.
Moreover, Minister Katumba Wamala commended former students of Kira Church of Uganda Primary School for their proactive efforts in promoting development within their alma mater. Acknowledging the school’s ambitions to construct a three-storey dormitory at an estimated cost of R600 million, he encouraged continued collaboration between alumni and local stakeholders to realize this ambitious goal.
General Katumba Wamala’s visit to Kira Church of Uganda Primary School not only reaffirmed the government’s commitment to infrastructure development but also underscored the importance of community cooperation in achieving sustainable urban growth. As preparations for the road project progress, his call for responsible land use serves as a crucial reminder of the collective responsibility to foster safe and conducive environments for future generations.
