Protests Erupt in Njeru Over Road Dust as Residents Block Jinja-Kampala Highway
Residents of Njeru in Buikwe district recently took to the streets in protest, blocking a section of the Jinja-Kampala highway near Nile Breweries. The residents were incensed by the persistent dust problem, which has resulted from stalled plans to tarmac this crucial roadway.
The issue began when the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) decided to address the large potholes that had developed on this part of the highway. At the St. Noa Mawagali junction, the pothole problem was particularly severe. To temporarily mitigate the situation, UNRA removed the damaged tarmac and replaced it with marrum. However, this solution has led to an increase in dust, severely affecting road users and prompting them to take drastic measures.
The residents’ protest caused significant disruption to transport along this vital trans-African highway, which serves as a major route to Mombasa Port. The police swiftly intervened to restore order, with Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto confirming the demonstration. Fortunately, no arrests were made during the incident.
Despite its importance, the Jinja-Kampala highway remains in a deplorable state. Large potholes plague various sections, making travel hazardous. The poor condition of the road has resulted in numerous accidents, with motorists frequently suffering tyre punctures. This ongoing issue highlights the urgent need for comprehensive repairs and maintenance.
Earlier this year, the UNRA spokesperson addressed the situation, explaining that a contractor is currently working on the Jinja-Kampala highway, starting from the Kampala side. “Every section where the contractor considers is in deplorable state, they fix it as full-scale works continue from the Kampala side,” stated Ssempebwa. According to him, the repair efforts are progressing, with the contractor now approaching the Namagunga area.
Road users, however, remain deeply concerned about the delays in constructing this essential highway. The lack of timely action by the government has exacerbated the frustrations of those who rely on this route for travel and transport. The residents’ recent protest underscores the urgent need for a permanent solution to the road’s poor condition.
The Jinja-Kampala highway is not just a local thoroughfare but a critical link in the broader trans-African network. Ensuring its proper maintenance and repair is vital for the safety and convenience of all who use it, as well as for the economic activities dependent on this key route to Mombasa Port.
As the situation develops, it is imperative that the responsible authorities expedite the necessary roadworks and address the residents’ concerns promptly. The health, safety, and economic well-being of the region depend on the swift and effective resolution of these ongoing infrastructure challenges.
