Local rapper Gereson Wabuyi, popularly known as Gravity Omutujju, has publicly called out Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, and the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), for failing to prevent his fans from targeting Omutujju’s late mother with negative remarks.
Gravity’s mother passed away last month due to complications from high blood pressure and diabetes.
Following her death, several celebrities, including Bobi Wine, shared their condolences on social media.
Despite these gestures, Omutujju expressed disappointment, stating that Bobi Wine’s efforts were insufficient.
During an interview with Sanyuka Television, Omutujju thanked the music community for their support during his time of mourning.
However, he pointed out that the NUP leader did not do enough to restrain his fans from making derogatory comments about his mother while she was still alive.
“It’s important to offer condolences when someone suffers a loss, but it’s also crucial to be sensitive when someone is going through a hard time, particularly concerning their parents,” Gravity said.
Tensions between Gravity and Bobi Wine’s supporters began in February when Gravity Omutujju publicly challenged the NUP leader to build a hospital at his One Love Beach in Busabala.
This challenge provoked anger among Bobi Wine’s fans, some of whom directed harsh insults at Omutujju’s mother.
“It’s fine for fans to critique my music, but if someone’s parent is suffering, it’s your duty to encourage your followers to lessen their attacks, especially if you have the power to influence them,” Omutujju stated. He added that it would have been more meaningful for Bobi Wine to take action before his mother’s passing.
“Don’t wait until someone has passed away to express your condolences.
You could have addressed the issues that caused her distress and made it clear that she was not involved, directing the criticism towards me instead,” he said.
Gravity’s appeal highlights the importance of leaders using their influence to promote respectful behavior among their supporters, particularly in sensitive situations.
