Government Extends Village Councils’ Term Due to Election Funding Shortage.

The government has once again extended the term of village councils due to a lack of funds for elections. The elections for the village and district LCs are postponed because the government cannot secure the necessary funding.

The current term of office for village leaders expires today, 3 July 2024. However, the Minister in charge of Local Government, Rapheal Magyezi, extended it for six months beginning tomorrow.

In a statement published in the Uganda Gazette, Minister Magyezi announced that the term of the LCs would be extended for another 180 days starting Thursday, 4 July 2024.

This is not the first time the government has extended the terms of LCs due to financial constraints. Minister Magyezi told CBS that the government has still not secured funds for the LC elections.

In July 2023, Minister Magyezi introduced a government bill to extend the terms of LCs after opposition MPs, led by Wakiso MP Ethel Naluyima, complained about the bill.
