Mpuuga’s Thanksgiving Mass in Masaka.
Today, the Nyendo Mukungwe legislator, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, returned to his home district of Masaka to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass, giving thanks to the Lord for His protection and guidance throughout his leadership journey. The former Leader of the Opposition in the 11th Parliament was joined by his fellow supporters, including notable figures such as Kimanya Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika, Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, Busiro East MP and Chairperson of COSASE Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona, among others who share Mpuuga’s vision and dedication.
“I heard rumors that they were calling members, telling them they would be denied party cards if they attended Mpuuga’s Thanksgiving. I’m glad I wasn’t called, and if it’s true, then it’s absurd” Sseggona said.
The celebration saw a gathering of distinguished personalities and well-wishers. The Buddu Ssaza Chief, Pokino Jude Muleke, graced the ceremony with his presence, bringing happiness and joy as he congratulated Hon. Mathias Mpuuga. His participation underscored the significance of the event within the community and highlighted the unity and support Mpuuga enjoys from various leaders and constituents.
Anticipation surrounded the expected attendance of the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, who was initially slated to be the fountain of honor at the Thanksgiving Mass. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to attend. In his stead, he sent a representative, ensuring the continuity of his support and blessings for the occasion. The Katikkiro was represented by the First Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda, Hon. Waggwa Nsibirwa, whose presence was warmly welcomed.
Spiritual leadership at the event was marked by the attendance of John Baptist Ssebayegga, representing the Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala. His presence added a significant religious dimension to the celebration, emphasizing the spiritual gratitude and faith that underscored the event.
Additionally, the chairman of the Buganda Twezimbe board, Mr. Fred Kiyimba Freeman, was in attendance, further highlighting the importance of the occasion. Mr. Freeman’s presence symbolized the collective support of the Buganda community towards Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, celebrating his achievements and contributions as a Parliamentary Commissioner and MP for Nyendo – Mukungwe.
The Thanksgiving Mass is a momentous occasion, filled with joy, gratitude, and unity. It celebrated not only the personal achievements of Hon. Mathias Mpuuga but also the collective spirit of his supporters and the broader community. The event reinforced the strength of the bonds within the Masaka district and beyond, showcasing a united front in appreciation of leadership, faith, and community solidarity.
Controversy Surrounding Hon. Mathias Mpuuga.
The political arena in Uganda is abuzz with controversy as Hon. Mathias Mpuuga finds himself at the center of a corruption scandal. Accusations have been leveled against Mpuuga by his fellow MPs, who allege that he engaged in corrupt practices related to the so-called ‘service award’. This issue has stirred significant debate and tension within the National Unity Platform (NUP), the party he belongs to.
Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of NUP, has taken a firm stance on the matter. He has publicly suggested that Mpuuga should return the taxpayers’ money, setting an example of accountability and integrity. Kyagulanyi’s call for Mpuuga to refund the money is not just a demand for financial restitution but also a symbolic act aimed at distinguishing the NUP from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime, which has long been accused of corruption and misuse of public funds.
However, Mpuuga has not taken kindly to this suggestion. He has refused to resign or return the money, leading to a significant confrontation within the party. His defiance has sparked a broader debate about loyalty and integrity within NUP. Many party members believe that Mpuuga’s refusal to comply with Kyagulanyi’s directive indicates a deeper alignment with President Museveni’s administration, where corruption is perceived to be rampant.
The tension has escalated, with NUP members expressing doubts about Mpuuga’s allegiance. They argue that his actions suggest he may have been collaborating with corrupt officials within the NRM for some time. This accusation, if true, would mark a severe breach of trust and a significant blow to NUP’s reputation as a party committed to fighting corruption and promoting transparency.
Kyagulanyi’s stance is clear: he envisions a new political order in Uganda, free from the corruption and embezzlement that have plagued the NRM’s tenure. He believes that for NUP to stand as a credible alternative, its leaders must exemplify the highest standards of ethical behavior. Mpuuga’s refusal to return the alleged ill-gotten funds undermines this vision and threatens to tarnish the party’s image.
Mpuuga’s supporters, however, argue that the allegations are unfounded and politically motivated. They contend that he has been a dedicated servant of the people, and this scandal is an attempt to discredit his work and diminish his influence within the party. This faction believes that the focus should be on unity and collective action against the NRM, rather than internal disputes.
The confrontation has highlighted the challenges faced by NUP as it seeks to position itself as a viable alternative to the NRM. The party’s ability to address internal corruption allegations effectively and transparently will be crucial in maintaining public trust and credibility.
As the situation unfolds, the future of Mpuuga within NUP remains uncertain. The party must navigate this internal crisis carefully to avoid further division and to reinforce its commitment to the principles of good governance and accountability. The outcome of this controversy will likely have significant implications for Uganda’s political landscape and the ongoing struggle for a more transparent and democratic governance system.
The controversy surrounding Hon. Mathias Mpuuga serves as a critical test for the National Unity Platform. How the party handles these allegations will determine its future trajectory and its ability to present itself as a genuine alternative to the entrenched corruption within the NRM. The political drama continues to unfold, with the eyes of the nation keenly watching the next moves of both Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi.
