NUP Disputes Claims of Collaboration with DP-Bloc.

NUP Disputes Claims of Collaboration with DP-Bloc.

Uganda politics/ Just as with unidentified flying objects (UFOs), it seems the National Unity Platform (NUP) has encountered another peculiar entity — one they have dubbed “Unidentified Political Objects.” On Thursday, the main opposition party firmly dismissed a group calling itself the ‘DP-Bloc,’ refuting their claims of any past collaboration with NUP.
The controversy began on Wednesday when a group identifying as DP-Bloc announced their supposed termination of cooperation with NUP. This group, led by former presidential candidate Walter Lubega Mukaku and former Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke, leveled accusations against NUP’s principal, Robert Kyagulanyi. They criticized Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, for exhibiting dictatorial tendencies that allegedly hampered their efforts to bring about regime change in Uganda.
The aggrieved DP-Bloc members further asserted that NUP had abandoned its mission of challenging President Museveni’s regime. Instead, they claimed NUP was focusing its efforts on opposing prominent opposition leaders rather than the incumbent president. Michael Mabikke went so far as to describe Kyagulanyi as an incompetent leader who had failed to transition from his music career to becoming a capable politician. According to Mabikke, this failure hindered NUP’s ability to address the current political challenges effectively.
Mabikke, who had previously left the Democratic Party (DP) to form the Social Democratic Party, has had minimal involvement in NUP circles. Similarly, Lubega Mukaku’s history with NUP is fraught with conflict. He infamously fell out with Bobi Wine in August 2020, which led to his removal from a top position within NUP. Despite his early support for Kyagulanyi during the 2017 Kyaddondo East by-election, Lubega’s influence within NUP had significantly waned.
Given the limited impact and visibility of these individuals within NUP, it was unsurprising when NUP categorically denied any existing relationship with the DP-Bloc or the individuals present at their press conference. In a statement posted on their official social media accounts, NUP clarified their position unequivocally: “For the record, NUP doesn’t and has never had any cooperation with the said group or the individuals at the said event. It follows, therefore, that you cannot end a non-existent cooperation. You cannot purport to get out of a non-existent marriage.”
NUP further explained that those who joined the party did so as individuals and were issued membership cards accordingly. Some of these individuals, the party noted, “ceased to be members when they ran for election as independents or under other political parties.”
The press conference held by the DP-Bloc has undoubtedly stirred political conversations and raised questions. However, NUP’s firm response aims to dispel any misconceptions regarding their association with the group. The party maintains that its focus remains steadfastly on their political agenda and on serving the interests of their members and supporters.
In this unfolding political drama, NUP’s message is clear: they do not recognize the DP-Bloc as a legitimate entity within their political framework. Instead, they continue to pursue their mission of advocating for change and representing their constituents, undeterred by what they perceive as distractions from external groups.
