Sugarcane farmers in Buyengo Sub-county, Jinja District, are raising serious concerns over the sharp decline in sugarcane prices.
During a visit led by the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Senyonyi, farmers expressed frustration with what they described as government neglect.
They lamented how unscrupulous individuals exploit their labor, leaving them with little to show for their hard work.
Government’s Unfulfilled Promises
In 2021, President Yoweri Museveni pledged to construct two sugar processing factories in the Busoga region to benefit sugarcane farmers.
These factories were meant to empower farmers by giving them fairer opportunities in the sugar market.
However, three years later, there is no sign of these factories being built, leaving farmers feeling betrayed and abandoned.
Call for Action
Joel Senyonyi urged the farmers and other stakeholders to keep demanding accountability and better services from the government.
He emphasized the importance of citizens using their voices to press for the fulfillment of promises and to ensure that farmers are fairly compensated for their produce.
Supporting Farmers for a Stronger Economy
The plight of sugarcane farmers in Jinja highlights a larger issue affecting agriculture in Uganda.
Supporting farmers through fair pricing, access to markets, and fulfillment of government promises is crucial for empowering communities and strengthening the nation’s economy.
Farmers in Buyengo Sub-county continue to hope for a better future where their efforts are rewarded.
The government must prioritize their needs and deliver on promises to build the sugar factories.
Farmers and stakeholders must remain united in their calls for action to improve the agricultural sector and ensure that farmers benefit from their labor.
