Kigali, Rwanda – Nshuti Divine Muheto , the reigning Miss Rwanda since 2022, could be facing a prison sentence of nearly two years following charges related to a drink-driving incident.
Muheto, who continues to hold the Miss Rwanda title after the pageant was suspended due to unrelated controversies, appeared before the Kicukiro Primary Court on October 31 to face several serious traffic-related charges.
Prosecutors are seeking a 20-month jail sentence for Ms. Muheto. The requested sentence includes six months for drink-driving, two months for driving without a valid permit, and a full year for leaving the scene of an accident.
According to the authorities, Ms. Muheto’s actions on October 24 led to significant public property damage after she allegedly crashed into both an electricity pole and a palm tree.
Alcohol Test Raises Concerns
Following the accident, Ms. Muheto was administered an alcohol test by the police, revealing a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 4.0.
This level is recognized as highly dangerous, often associated with severe alcohol poisoning and potential loss of consciousness, which raises serious questions about her ability to drive safely.
The prosecution will use this information to argue the severity of her offense and the potential risks her actions posed to the public.
Incident Details and Court Appearance
On October 30, Rwanda National Police publicly confirmed the arrest of Ms. Muheto, detailing accusations including driving without a license, driving under the influence, damaging public property, and fleeing the accident scene.
When she appeared in court on October 31, Ms. Muheto arrived in a vehicle belonging to the Rwanda Investigations Bureau, dressed in a black blouse with pink trousers, a zipped black jacket, and dark sunglasses, exuding her characteristic elegance despite the circumstances. Observers noted how she had draped her jacket sleeve to discreetly conceal the handcuffs.
Prior Traffic Incident Reported
This recent incident was not Ms. Muheto’s first traffic-related infraction. In September 2023, she reportedly had a similar incident when her car collided with a building in Kigali’s Gasabo district.
Though she sustained only minor injuries, the accident raised concerns, highlighting a pattern of risky behavior.
The Challenges of Fame
Muheto’s lifestyle often places her in social environments where alcohol is present, and the pressures associated with her social status appear to have contributed to her recent challenges.
As a public figure, her actions are under constant scrutiny, making this latest legal situation even more significant.
Since winning her crown in 2022, Muheto has continued to represent Rwanda as Miss Rwanda despite the event’s suspension amid unrelated controversies.
This recent incident could complicate her role further, as it not only draws attention to the legal implications but may also prompt a broader discussion about the responsibilities associated with public roles and the pressures faced by those in the limelight.
Ms. Muheto’s court case is ongoing, and her supporters and the public alike await the final decision on her charges. If convicted, she faces not only jail time but potential fines related to property damage, signaling the weight of responsibility that comes with public recognition.
