Uganda Police Condemns Unprofessional Arrest of Elderly Woman in Mbarara

Updates: The Uganda Police Force has strongly condemned the unprofessional and inhumane arrest of an elderly woman, Victoria Kabatoraine Ariau, in Mbarara.

The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, has sparked outrage over the manner in which the arrest was conducted.

Incident Details

The video shows police officers forcibly dragging the elderly woman through mud during an arrest related to a land conflict in Lubiri Cell, Mbarara City.

The scene has drawn criticism for its disregard for dignity and professional standards.

Uganda Police Response

In a statement shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) page, @PoliceUg expressed regret and disapproval of the officers’ actions.

They acknowledged that such behavior is inconsistent with their moral and professional standards.

“The actions exhibited in the video contradict our core values and ethical conduct as a law enforcement body,” the statement read.

Officers Involved

The officers implicated in the incident include:

ASP Andrew Betunga (in uniform)
Detective Constable Darious Aharizira
Detective Constable Hope Nsasirwe
Detective Constable Loyce Kiboneka

These officers were executing the arrest of Victoria Kabatoraine Ariau.

Disciplinary Action

Uganda Police have confirmed that the four officers have been arrested and are currently detained in Mbarara.

Disciplinary measures are underway, and further updates on the progress of the case will be shared in due course.
