Breaking Sports News: Saudi Arabia has officially been confirmed as the host nation for the 2034 men’s football World Cup.
According to The New York Times, this decision was made during an Extraordinary FIFA Congress meeting on Wednesday, where both the 2030 and 2034 World Cup hosting plans were finalized.
Joint Hosting for the 2030 World Cup
The 2030 men’s football World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, marking a historic collaboration across two continents.
Additionally, three matches will be played in South America—specifically in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay—to commemorate the tournament’s centennial.
The inclusion of South American nations in the 2030 World Cup honors the opening tournament, which was held in Uruguay in 1930.
Uruguay emerged victorious in that event, defeating Argentina in the final.
Nevertheless Paraguay, home to the South American football confederation (Conmebol), also shares in this historic celebration.
Conmebol is the oldest continental football federation and played a key role in the creation of the World Cup.
Automatic Qualification for Host Nations
As hosts, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will automatically qualify for the 2030 tournament.
The remaining slots will be determined through qualifying competitions across FIFA’s six continental confederations.
For the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams, qualification slots were distributed as follows:
Asian Football Confederation: 8 places
Confederation of African Football: 9 places
Concacaf (North, Central America, and Caribbean): 6 places
Conmebol: 6 places
Oceania Football Confederation: 1 place
UEFA (Europe): 16 places
Therefore, two additional spots will be decided through a play-off tournament involving six teams.
The allocation for the 2030 tournament is expected to follow a similar format, though it has yet to be officially confirmed.

The selection of Saudi Arabia underscores FIFA’s growing emphasis on expanding the World Cup to new regions and fostering global inclusivity in the sport.
