Uganda’s dream of qualifying for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ended in a semifinal loss to Tanzania.
In an intense match played in front of a passionate Tanzanian crowd, a late extra-time goal saw the hosts win 2-1, dashing Uganda’s hopes of a third consecutive appearance at the U20 AFCON.
The game remained tight throughout, with both teams displaying determination and skill.
Uganda took the lead shortly after halftime, with team captain Toto Majub scoring just a minute into the second half, in the 46th minute.
This goal gave the Uganda Hippos the upper hand, raising hopes of securing a spot in the final and qualifying for the U20 AFCON.
However, Tanzania, spurred on by the energy of their home fans, fought back. Their persistence paid off when they equalized 15 minutes before the end of regular time, sending the match into extra time.
Uganda came close to regaining the lead in the 110th minute, but their celebrations were cut short as the goal was disallowed due to a handball.
In the dying minutes going to penalties, a defensive mistake in the 119th minute allowed Tanzania to score the winning goal, ending Uganda’s campaign and securing Tanzania’s place at the U20 AFCON next year.
Uganda entered the tournament as the CECAFA Zonal defending champions, having won the previous edition by defeating South Sudan.
The team had shown promise throughout the group stages, but the late goal in the semifinal shattered their ambitions.
This loss marks a bitter end for Uganda in what had been a hopeful campaign, as they bow out of the tournament with no chance of appearing in the 2025 U20 AFCON.
