Over the past few months, Mzee Magala Balikyewuunya has become a prominent figure on Ugandan social media.
Known for his strong opinions and unique personality, Mzee Magala has captured the attention of many as one of the most notable voices in the country.
A Proud Personality with a Unique Story
Mzee Magala is renowned for an extraordinary reason—he has constructed his own grave.
This act stems from his belief that he does not want to burden his family with funeral expenses when he passes away.
“I don’t want my family to organize a meeting for me when I die, because they might not have enough money,” he stated.
Magala also pointed out that preparing one’s grave in advance was once an esteemed practice among Buganda’s legends, citing historical figures such as Apollo Kaggwa, Stanislas Mugwanya, and Zakaria Kisingiri, who all built their graves before they passed away.
“It’s a great occasion and a prestigious one,” he added.
Non-Believer with Strong Cultural Roots
Unlike many in Uganda, Mzee Magala openly shares that he is a non-believer and does not follow any religion.
He often questions the fairness of God, citing his own financial struggles as an example.
“Why does God give others money and leave the rest of us poor?” he asks.
Instead of religious beliefs, Magala places his faith in the culture and social ancestors of Buganda.
A True Cultural Advocate
Mzee Magala has made a name for himself as a true Muganda who passionately discusses facts about Buganda’s history and traditions.
His knowledge and dedication to preserving and promoting Buganda culture have gained him respect beyond Buganda, reaching people all over Uganda.
Helping the Community
Beyond his cultural insights, Mzee Magala is known for his charitable work. During an appearance on Sanyuka TV’s “Crossfire” program, he revealed that he actively helps individuals affected by drug addiction, supporting them on their path to recovery.
He also spoke highly of Mother Kevin, the founder of Nsambya Hospital, noting that despite not being an educated doctor, her impact has saved countless lives.
“She was not formally educated, but what she did continues to help people today,” he said.
Content and Knowledgeable
Despite not having a formal education, Mzee Magala prides himself on his wisdom.
“I am proud to be uneducated, but I am knowledgeable,” he declares.
This self-assurance resonates with many Ugandans who admire his straightforwardness and commitment to living authentically.
Mzee Magala stands as a testament to embracing one’s roots and living life on one’s own terms. His story of resilience, community service, and deep cultural pride makes him a true legend in his own right.
